What is a reading group?

Reading groups are made up of people who love reading and talking about books. They meet regularly to choose books to read, and then discuss them.

These informal groups may be set up by local organisations such as libraries or by a group of friends. It can be a fun way to meet other book lovers, discover new books and rediscover old classics.

Our discussion questions are designed to be a starting point for your reading group meetings. Select a reading group title from our index on the left.

Gregory Day
When life in his picturesque home town of Mangowak becomes too complicated, artist Noel Lee flees to the bush. Alone, in a harsh and unforgiving landscape, he eventually comes to his senses when an unusual encounter re-enlivens his mind. Returning to town with a new-found lightness and vision, he finds an even sadder, funnier, and richer destiny awaits him. Mangowak’s local hotel is to be knocked over to make way for a new development. Noel’s beloved family property holds an antiquated hotel licence from the nineteenth century, which just happens still to be valid. Encouraged by his friends and family Noel surrenders to his unlikely new role as the town publican, but only on condition that The Grand Hotel is run in the freewheeling and imaginative spirit of the most radical of his artistic heroes . . .
