ReportThe incomparible Jack Reacher has to contend with his gut instinct to overcome his initial certainty that arch-enemy Barr is the obvious red-handed criminal in this new thriller from Lee Childs. A character who not only keeps you flicking pages well into the early morning hours, but also draws intriguing and fascinating characters into his orbit throughout the Jack Reacher series. A worthy addition to the outstanding Reacher series!

Report5 out of 6 people have been shot from a secluded position in a car park. Police arrest James Barr, who continuously tells them to "Get Jack Reacher". Now Jack knows Barr from past experience, as a killer who got away, due to technicalities, and hasn't a doubt in the world that the man is guilty - at first. "One shot, One Kill" is the Sniper's Creed, so when Jack finally gets his brain into gear, and starts listening, he gets to thinking about why there was 1 miss. He realises that the miss was on purpose, and that maybe someone has set up Barr to take the fall. In Jack's own rough style he finally gets a lead on another suspect and the hunt is on. Taking on a young defence lawyer, who is also the daughter of the District Attorney and prosecutor, as his sidekick, they find themselves in a battle with an unscrupulous Russian gang, the leader of which finally admits to the set-up, after Jack convinces him, in no uncertain manner, to come clean. Jack's style of getting someone to do that, is not as easy as it sounds. His experience in Military combat leaves nothing out, when it means kill or be killed. This is another unputdownable novel from Lee Child, and keeps the heart racing right to the end.

ReportSo this is Jack Reacher. This is the first of Lee Child's books I've read and it is an interesting point to jump in at, as this is book 9 of the series. Reacher is an ex-MP, a man mountain who is fast with his wits and his fists. He is the traditional lone-wolf, an avenging angel with little that is angelic about him. Is he a hero? That's a hard call, as there is much about him, that crosses boundaries of morality as he constantly works outside both the law and society. It is that boundary crossing though, that it is at the heart of the story and creates the almost non-stop ride of this thriller. And, Reacher is not the only one who crosses boundaries. There is almost no-one in this story who isn't a survivor, who doesn't work outside the law to get something ... to survive. Many things, and many people, are not as they initially seem as Child takes the reader on an action packed ride in heartland America. Once started, it is hard to put this book down and I certainly found myself reading into the wee hours of the morning!
