Synopsis
Maurice, an amazing cat who has survived four years on the toughest streets in the whole of the Discworld, reckons that rats are dumb. Clever, OK, but dumb. Maurice, however, is smart. Smart enough to recognize that there’s a new kind of rat around – rats who have been eating wizards’ rubbish and can now talk. Smart enough to get a pretty amazing idea when he spots a stupid-looking kid playing the flute...Now Maurice has his very own ‘plague of rats’ – and his own Pied Piper. And his money-bags are getting fuller and fuller. Until the group reach the farflung village of Bad Blintz…
Editorial Reviews
"High comedy with unforgettable animal characters. The lightness of Terry Pratchett's wit (especially his word games) makes it easy to underestimate the more serious points of this story" - Julia Eccleshare, Guardian
"Alongside the gags and pest-control politics, there are enough complex ideas about nature, nurture and understanding to satisfy a wide audience" - Observer
"One of Terry Pratchett's funniest creations of recent years... It all adds up to a wonderful book - hilarious, brilliantly constructed and, especially towards its conclusion, shot through with an edginess to balance the laughs" - SFX
"Excruciatingly funny, ferociously intelligent" - Kirkus Reviews
"The humour is sophisticated and demands that the reader keep up to speed. A passion for language, wordplay and puns bursts from the pages." - Fiona Lafferty, Daily Telegraph
"A brilliant and bizarre reworking of that well-known folk tale about the Pied Piper of Hamelin" - School Librarian
"...clearly destined for great things... witty, exuberant and irreverent... The narrative is deeply pleasurable and makes a wonderful and entertaining read." - Bookseller
"Terry Pratchett doesn't play literary ball, preferring to forge his own way on the back of some of the most original and inventive fantasy available for children today. In The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents he creates a funny, fast-paced fantasy with a heart" - The Scotsman
"Written especially for children, but will delight his adult fans with its characteristic wit and imagination gone wild... This is a wonderful comic tale with many great touches. This book will meet the expectations of existing fans and introduce a younger generation to Pratchett's wit and wisdom. Highly recommended" - The Good Book Guide
"A laugh-a-minute, highlighted by the satisfaction of recognising bits of back story... Humour, much less the illuminating kind wielded by Pratchett, is rare in fantasyland" - Times Educational Supplement
