Synopsis
All surfers dream of shedding responsibilities and answering the siren's call of ocean swells. For most, it is an ideal that recedes as age advances - as family, career and provider fatigue threatens to overwhelm the wanderlust of youth. But what if you could defy the slow march of age? Shelve all your worldly pressures, pack up the family and a few trusty surfboards and hit the open road for the Great Australian surfing road trip? Inspired by the dreams of his youth, surf writer Tim Baker embarks on the Big Lap in search of the perfect wave and domestic bliss. Surfari documents the state of surf culture and our coastline, and the array of colourful characters who inhabit these parts, evoking all the magic, charm and challenges such a lifestyle entails. It is a story for anyone who has ever dreamed of an alternative to the busy, micro-scheduled existence of work, school, shopping and the daily drudge. The result is a lively, colourful account of what happens when you trade your life for another variety, and the delights and dangers that lay in wait when you dare to chase your dreams and follow another path.

More News & BlogHaving just driven 27,000 km over eight months with our family of four around this vast island nation of ours, I feel I can address the above question with some qualification. I’ve noted with interest the hand-wringing over the dire state of domestic tourism, detected Australia’s old cultural cringe coming to the fore in our stampede to declare our resorts outdated, our travel experiences...

ReportThe insightful Tim Baker has once again proved his down to earth mastery of story telling. 'Surfari' speaks Australian beach, our love affair with the coast and a yarn I couldn't put down - between waves. Best book in ages. Stoked!

ReportMarooned in central Brisbane, I took the opportunity to go with Tim and family via this book around Australia. It was a fantastic journey, complete with highs and lows.I got great rides, was skunked a few times, was freaked out by the sharks and aggro surfers. I liked surfing with the old men of the sea (and some of the young ones), enjoyed the good food, admired the land and ocean and the life that exists on and in both. Tim and family were excellent company and I can't thank them enough for taking me (figuratively) with them.
