The earliest versions of Juleps from the 1770s were a combination of rum (or French brandy), sugar, and water but it’s the modern Mint Julep, made with bourbon whiskey, that has become ubiquitous. A phylloxera epidemic in the mid-1800s wiped out many French vineyards, which restricted the French brandy supply and cemented whiskey as the spirit of choice for the Julep.
The Mint Julep became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938 and has remained synonymous with the event ever since.
INGREDIENTS
- 8 mint leaves
- ½ oz (15ml) simple syrup
- 2½ oz (75ml) bourbon whiskey
METHOD
- In a julep cup (or old-fashioned glass), muddle the mint with the simple syrup.
- Add the bourbon and fill the glass with pebble ice.
- Swizzle until the exterior of the cup is frosty.
- Top with more pebble ice and garnish with a large mint sprig.
Tip: try a Peach Julep if you can secure a bottle of peach brandy.
